My paintings speak (something of) my truth and I share them in the hope that a woman speaking her truth may inspire others to create their own true work.

These new paintings develop a thread in my on-going project of ‘Unselfing’. Colour on surface sings of emotions and memory passing through my body, as human-woman-mother-grandmother, organic, self-determining, ageing.

A painting begins with a graphite drawing, moving over the surface in a continuous curving, intersecting line that creates shapes and boundaries.

I choose colours intuitively at first and then in relation to existing colours, manipulating degrees of tone and transparency to create each painting’s particular harmony. I follow Patrick Heron’s method (from the 1970s) of using small brushes to slowly create the particular curve of each bounding line. This bounding process uses acrylic marker in conjunction with paint, in a slow interaction between shape, line and the grain of the heavy watercolour paper

Finally, I go to my journal to select a title that speaks to the emotion behind the painting.
